Beyond Do No Harm Principles Session #8: Identification Documents & Criminalization

Join other health care and public health workers, and organizers working toward interrupting criminalization in the medical-industrial complex. This session's topics focus on BDNH Principle #4, how health care providers can end the practice of calling police on suspicion of fraudulent identification documents.

Image id: Interrupting Criminalization’s Beyond Do No Harm “IDs and Criminalization” Sept 22, 2023. First heading: “How are IDs Related to Criminalization? Mismatched ID: Trans People who ID is mismatched from gender expression, 1 in 50 trans people who show mismatched IDs get physically attacked because of it, rate is 3x higher for Black folks. Black migrants who go by a name different than birth name. No ID - avoiding seeking care out of fear —> higher rates of ER visits. Lesser known forms of ID —> example, consular ID —> denial of care, harassment and criminalization. Next section: What can I do as a care provider? Interpersonal: Do not question folks’ IDs and/or gender, use right name and pronouns, advocate for patients to insurance provideres, support by signing off on name change, gender marker documentation. Structural campaigns: hospital protocol - higher navigators to support folks seeking care, campaign for more recognition of expansive forms of ID, create privacy for convos, be sure to build with grassroots community.
