Transformative Justice Help Desk

Interrupting Criminalization offers a Transformative Justice Help Desk consultation service for our partners working on projects and community-wide interventions to respond to, transform and interrupt harm and violence without the state.

The TJ Help Desk is available by appointment to offer thought partnership and one-on-one consultation to support groups and individuals who are working on projects and community-wide interventions to end violence without using the police and other carceral systems.


What can the TJ Help Desk assist with?

We can think through intervention design, implementation, strategies, outreach, building and supporting your team/collective, ethical dilemmas, and long-term planning for addressing violence without using the state. We can also think through problems or sticking points in the work to make your project, intervention, facilitator process or political work more value aligned and impactful.

Topics can include:

  • Building Non-carceral, Non-Police, Crisis Response Teams

  • Supporting the facilitators of community accountability processes related to sexual violence, interpersonal violence and intimate violence

  • Mutual aid groups~ forming, building and implementation

  • Navigating the application of TJ inside of existing structures like non-profits, schools or social work/service settings

  • Deepening and clarifying political alignment with TJ and advising on political education curriculum

  • Care Team and Safety Team building

  • Organizational Structure Building and Design

  • Participatory Defense Campaigns and supporting people inside or coming home

  • Sex worker organizing and safety

  • Safety planning for individuals and groups

  • Building your group's formation - like volunteer training, decision making, policies and procedures, hiring and more.

Do I have to live in the United States to use the TJ Help Desk?

No. The TJ Help Desk can take calls from everywhere.

What DOESN’T the TJ Help Desk assist with?

  • At this time, the TJ Help Desk cannot assist with internal conflict, interpersonal conflict, or mediation within your group.

  • The TJ Help Desk does not offer community accountability processes — however, we do offer support to facilitators who are in the midst of holding down a process.

  • The TJ Help Desk does not offer crisis intervention work or direct social services.

  • The TJ Help Desk only advises and cannot lead implementation of the work.

Who is the TJ Help Desk?

The TJ Help Desk is staffed by IC’s Transformative Justice Fellow Shira Hassan, from Just Practice Collaborative. Depending on your intervention or needs, Shira may pull in additional skilled consultants. Learn more about Shira.
